not so easy. there aren't a lot of piano books geared to kids under the age of eight.
but. i found one that i seriously love. it uses animals for the notes; "e" for elephant, "c" for cat, "d" for dog, etc. example:

the only problem is that this book is primarily a piano book. i love that it teaches note names and positions on the keyboard, and the next book in the series teaches beginning timing. but that's really as far as it goes. i'm assuming that by that point, the child would be ready to move on to one of the piano books for eight-year-olds that you can find just about everywhere.
so i kept looking. and i found theory time.

i seriously love the look of these books. and they're dead cheap, too; like nine bucks for a workbook. they also go all the way from primer - grade 12. there are great worksheets included (which the other book does not have) that really cement the ideas and also look pretty fun.
also, it isn't just piano. there are sections on music history, different instruments, etc.
so my idea is to use them together
and so. probably starting next semester,
why did brewer not let us use that book????

ReplyDeleteOkay, really, those look really cool. And I'm tempted by them. But I should really use the entire violin curriculum that I ALREADY HAVE. Sigh. We did violin over the summer, but we just haven't fit it in this fall. Maybe in the spring. Or maybe next month when we have a break from CC. I'm so indecisive. Tell you what. You start this so that I'll feel motivated to get back on the music bandwagon. =) Or because you want to teach your kids music. I don't REALLY think it's all about me...

ReplyDeletetwylia, if by some act of God, you acquire a car before Jesus comes back, i will teach grace piano, lol. we could even swap out days where you came down here and i went up there. however, she's still probably entirely too young to really be starting piano lessons JUST yet.
and perry, I KNOW RIGHT. however, these books only go through 12th grade, as i mentioned. we'll just have to be sad that our books didn't have awsum coloring pages and junk.
